National Mediation Board

Here’s some mediation information to start your week.

Have you ever heard of the National Mediation Board? It’s a small independent federal government agency established in 1934 to to maintain the flow of interstate commerce by providing mediation, arbitration, and legal services to employees and management of railroads and airlines. NMB mediators help resolve labor collective bargaining contract disputes, NMB arbitrators handle thousands of grievance procedures annually, and their Office of Legal Affairs issues rulings on matters related to organization and representation of employees.

The NMB figured prominently in the news recently as an emergency board of the NRB attempted to avert a freight railroad strike that risks crippling the movement of goods and wreaking havoc on our nation’s supply chain. And just last week, pilots at American Airlines announced they are seeking NMB mediation to address pay and scheduling issues along with pilots from other major carriers.

Fortunately, you don’t have to be a national airline or railroad to seek the assistance of a trained professional mediator to resolve your business disputes and avoid litigation. Experienced mediators can help you and your clients reach sensible and creative solutions that minimize expenses and let you get back to business.
